What to do and see in Numana

A STROLL THROUGH THE HISTORIC CENTRE

  • Numana – Piazza della Torre – © Sauro Strappato
  • Numana – chiesa di Cristo Re – © Sauro Strappato
  • Numana – Palazzo comunale – © Sauro Strappato

A relaxing walk through the characteristic narrow streets of the historic centre of Numana, rich in art and millenary culture, is not to miss.  Every summer the village comes alive with markets of local products and crafts, many cultural and entertainment events. The Church of Christ the King and the Town Hall, positioned opposite one another, are in the main square. You can admire the wooden Byzantine Holy Crucifix inside the church. It is said that it comes from the Holy Land. Behind the Town Hall, La Fenice road, there is the State Antiquarium, an archaeological museum that displays numerous findings that bear witness to the settlements in the south-eastern side of the Conero Mount from the Paleolithic to the late Roman Age. The museum testimonies the important role of the village in the first millennium B.C. In the past Numana was an active commercial centre, a stopping point for boats going along the Adriatic and the terminal of a transappenine itinerary. The museum  displays the valuable grave goods of the Picenum Queen’s tomb, discovered in Sirolo, in the Pine Trees area, in 1989. It one of the richest burials to this day. It is possible to admire two chariots, a chariot and a gig, used in her funeral, a belt frame for weaving that is the only ancient sample preserved up to our days. Complementary to the visit to this museum is that to the archaeological area The Pine Trees in Sirolo where the Picenum Queen’s tomb where discovered. You can see a sector of the famous Picentes necropolis with circle tombs and illustrated educational panels placed along the visitor’s path. Continuing the visit to the historic centre along Rome road, you can reach the famous small Tower square where there is the Fisherman’s bronze statue made by Johannes Genemans dedicated to the fishermen, their values and their spirit. A little further on there is the Tower, the symbol of Numana and the only medieval remaining preserved in the town. In the square, sitting on a bench and on a clear day, you can admire an impressive view of the entire coastline up to Civitanova Marche.

THE COSTARELLA

It is certainly the most typical and photographed road in Numana. It is a long and gentle staircase used by fishermen to reach the port. You can take a lovely walk among the old fishermen’ houses built in light stone of the Conero, smelling the scent of the colourful flowers characterizing it.

THE TOURIST PORT

The port is one of the most fascinating places of seaside towns. The Numana Port is one of the few ports of the Marche coast and enjoys a strategic position to reach all the best beaches of the coast by sea (obviously the best choice is to do the boat trip with Conero Fun Boat! 🙂 In addition to boat trips there is the possibility of diving monitored by the diving experts of the Centro Sub Monte Conero and Centro Subacqueo Seawolf. The  best places for immersion are those around the shipwrecks and where you can dive in the mud, to discover coloured nudibranches having nothing to envy to those you can see in tropical waters. Sitting on a bench, admiring the reflections of the boats on the water or seeing the return of the fishermen left before sunrise who display the catch of the day on the pier: all absolutely not to miss! On the 14th of August evening the festival in honour of the Madonna takes place at the port. In a suggestive atmosphere, enlightened by candles, Madonna’s statue appears from waters, taken by some divers and then carried on the surface of the water along a lighted pathway. After Holy Mass the statue is accompanied in procession on the sea followed by coastguard boats. In the end there are fireworks on the sea and local people and tourists can admire them sitting on the beaches of the coast up to Marcelli.

PIAZZA NOVA AND THE PANORAMIC TERRACE

  • Numana – panorama verso il Conero dai Giadini di Piazza Nova – © Sauro Strappato
  • Numana – Piazza Nova – © Sauro Strappato

Near the main square there is Piazza Nova from which you can enjoy a unique breath-taking view on Conero Mount, the Spiaggia del Frate (the Friar’s beach) and Numana harbour. The sunset gives unforgettable colours to the sky and the sea. Overlooking the sea you will find a stone cross and the famous bench of love “ViviAmo Numana”, a perfect stage for romantic photos. On the 14th of August at 5.15 a.m. the classic “Concerto all’alba” (the sunrise concert) takes place with fine local musicians playing live in the square. Music, the colours of the sunrise on the sea for emotions with no equal!

A WALK ALONG THE SEASIDE PROMENADE OF MARCELLI

Marcelli is a small district of Numana and a completely flat location. The seaside promenade, connected to the central course, is a nice meeting point on summer evenings for an ice cream with friends or a stroll among the local typical markets, animated by music and live shows.
