Osimo is defined as beautiful and…secret. Beautiful because it is a smart town, with its glorious past, well documented by numerous finds, historic buildings and churches. Secret because its underground conceals another town, made of galleries and passageways carved out of the sedimentary rock, different from the town that extends in the sunlight. Rising on two hills dominating the valleys of the Musone and the Aspio rivers, Osimo enjoys a favourable position to the development of civilisations and is a town of ancient origins. Various findings of Late Neolithic settlements were discovered in the valleys. Founded by the Picene people during the Iron Age, under the Latin name of Auximum, the town enjoyed many years of prosperity during the Roman period of which it brings numerous testimonies. You can explore Osimo on your own but we warmly recommend to book a guided tour of the underground and surface town at the Tourist Information Office, Via Fonte Magna, 12 tel: +39 800228800.
